National telecom back bone, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has decided to set up 100 Free WiFi Zones in Rural India in association with social networking giant – Facebook. BSNL will be providing the back-haul internet bandwidth for all these 100 locations.
As per latest reports, Facebook plans to invest around Rs 5 Crore per annum for this prestigious project and WiFi services will be rolled out with vendors like – Quad Gen and Trimax. So far, nearly 25 villages have been covered under the pilot programme in southern and western India.
BSNL CMD Shri. Anupam Srivastava said – “Facebook has chosen 100 villages to provide Wi-Fi hotspots on a revenue-sharing model. It will spend Rs 5 lakh per site a year for buying bandwidth from BSNL for a period of three years. We are aiming to complete the WiFi rollout by December 31 this year“
With BSNL WiFi project, consumers can get free broadband internet connectivity for the first half an hour. The WiFi network has a capacity to allow an average of 2,000 individuals to latch on at the same time.

BSNL already launched Free WiFi Services at major tourist locations throughout the country and aims to set up a total of 2,500 WiFi hotspots by the end of current fiscal year.
