As we reported earlier, state run PSU, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) launched Wi-Fi Mobile Data Offloading Service (MDO). BSNL deployed this latest and innovative technology in India in association with M/s Quadgen Wireless Solutions Pvt. Ltd.
Tele density in Urban India has crossed 100+% and that in Rural crossed 50%. Today in India, even with the adoption of 3G & 4G technologies by all the leading telecom operators, Mobile Broadband density has not improved. This is primarily due to the limited access to the licensed spectrum and excessive pricing of spectrum. Solution partly lies in exploiting license free spectrum like Wi-Fi.
Indian society is a youthful society and craving for mobile internet access on ubiquitous basis. Urban, Sub-Urban, Rural youth has been aspiring for online connectivity on almost 24×7 basis. Digital literacy has substantially increased amongst Urban and even rural youth due to the availability of affordable smartphones. Smartphone penetration has triggered the hunger to access the internet on 24×7 basis.
5G Wi-Fi technology has matured from Consumer grade to a Carrier grade with wide scale adoption. 5G Wi-Fi technological advancement enable high speed internet access with high throughput of around 1.2 Gbps from each 5G Wi-Fi hot spot.

BSNL Mobile Data Offloading Service (MDO) is currently available to all BSNL customers (both prepaid and postpaid) in Karnataka Circle and it will be extended to other Circles also in phased manner.
What is Mobile Data Offloading (MDO) Service ?
Technically speaking, BSNL mobile users can access wide-band Wi-Fi channels at the hot spots instead of narrow-band 3G channels and thus getting faster speeds than 3G which enhances mobile consumer internet experience. BSNL customers with Mobile Data Plans can seamlessly connect and use BSNL-Quadgen Wi-Fi hot spot and enjoy 3 times faster speed than that of 3G/4G.
How to Access BSNL Mobile Data Offloading (MDO) Service?
BSNL MDO service invocation would be quite simple with user friendly activation process on smartphones, tablets with SIMs of any make compatible with Wi-Fi standards.
- BSNL customers using iPhones need to download MDO certificate and select the MDO SSID and start browsing.
- BSNL customers using Android phones may select the MDO SSID and then select EAP-SIM authentication method and start browsing.
