To increase broadband penetration in rural villages, Department of Telecommunication (DoT) plans to offer Free Broadband Internet Services in small towns and villages through state run telco Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL).
This move will further boost the Digital India initiatives undertaken by Government of India. BSNL is already providing Free Public Wi-Fi Services at major tourist and historic locations in India. The PSU set an ambitious target of installing 2500 Wi-Fi hot spots by March 2016 and more than 700 hot spots were already commissioned.
As per the latest media reports, a senior official from DoT said – “We are planning to rope in BSNL for spreading and creating internet awareness. BSNL already offers services mainly voice at a subsidized rate in small and remote areas, which will now be extended to internet services.”
DoT plans to offer FREE internet services free for first two months or FREE internet usage during night with a specified data usage limit to people in rural India. The proposals are in preliminary stages, it will take few months to finalize the whole architecture. The final decision on this matter will be taken by Honorable Telecom minister Shri. Ravi Shankar Prasad.
