An MoU between state run telecom major Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) and Essel Group (Sity Cable) is signed today (on 3rd August 2016) with areas of mutual interest between the two companies.
As per the latest information, Essel Group will work as a Virtual Network Operator (VNO) for broadband services. They may lease bandwidth from BSNL and set up its own infrastructure to sell broadband services to its customers.
BSNL Chairman and Managing Director Shri. Anupam Shrivastava told – “We have signed a memorandum of understanding with Essel Group in presence of Essel Group Chairman Subhash Chandra. One of the area is VNO where Essel will set up its infrastructure and work with us as a VNO for broadband services.”
As a Virtual Network Operator (VNO), Essel Group will be allowed to lease internet bandwidth from BSNL to offer voice and data services to its customers under its own brand name. They are also allowed to offer their own tariff plans and packages. In addition, Essel Group would partner with BSNL in the up coming smart city project across the country.

Essel Group is one of India’s largest Multi System Operator (MSO) owned by Dr. Subhash Chandra having diverse portfolio of assets in media, packaging, entertainment, technology-enabled services, infrastructure development and education. Essel Group runs multiple channels under Zee brand, has expressed their interest to deliver content it owns, to broadband and mobile user of BSNL. They would also like to use BSNL broadband network to deliver their DTH customer base video on demand service.
