TRAI Report Card January 2016: BSNL Market Share Increased With Top Three Position In Monthly Growth Rate - Beating Airtel, Vodafone & Idea

Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) has released the latest telecom subscription data as on 31st January 2016. As per the latest report, the market share of BSNL has increased to 8.20% in January 2016.

The PSU positioned itself in the Top Three in monthly growth rate of wireless subscribers beating the major private players like – Airtel, Vodafone and Idea. In January 2016, BSNL added more than 9.3 lakhs of new mobile customers and thereby increasing its market share from 8.16% to 8.20%.

As we reported earlier, the performance of BSNL in wireless subscriber addition and monthly growth rate is continuously increasing from July 2015 on wards – after the launch of FREE All India Roaming Scheme.

Among BSNL units, all telecom circles achieved positive growth in wireless subscriber addition except West Bengal (-3,12,454) and Karnataka (-66,530) during the month of January 2016. The best performers are UP East (+1,97,413), Maharashtra (+1,37,914), Madhya Pradesh (1,12,576), UP West (+1,18,939) and Bihar (+1,00,001).

BSNL holds the No.1 position in Landline segment with 59.31% market share. Airtel holds the No.1 position in Broadband segment (Wired + Wireless) position with 23.34% market share and Vodafone at second position with 18.73% market share as on 31st January 2016.

The total number of telephone subscribers in India increased from 1036.41 million at the end of December 2015 to 1043.29 million at the end of January 2016, thereby showing a monthly growth rate of 0.66%.

Total wireless subscriber base increased from 1010.89 million at the end of December 2015 to 1017.97 million at the end of January 2016, thereby registering a monthly growth rate of 0.7%.

As on 31st January 2016, the private access service providers held 91.45% market share of the wireless subscribers whereas BSNL and MTNL, the two PSUs access service providers, held only 8.55% market share.

The total number of broadband subscribers in India, increased from 136.53 million at the end of december 2015 to 140.10 million at the end of January 2016 with monthly growth rate of 2.62%.

Top
Five service providers constituted 83.25% market share of total
broadband subscribers at the end of January 2016. These service
providers were Bharti Airtel (32.70 million), Vodafone (26.24 million),
Idea Cellular Ltd (22.04 million), BSNL (20.16 million) and Reliance
Communications Group (15.49 million).

In Wired Broadband segment, BSNL holds the No.1 position with 9.9 million customers, followed by Bharati Airtel with 1.68 million customers.

Mobile Number Portability (MNP)

In the month of January 2016, a total of 5.62 million subscribers submitted their requests for MNP. With this, the cumulative MNP requests increased from 194.01 million at the end of December 2015 to 199.62 million at the end of January 2016.
