BSNL Registered An Outstanding Mobile Data Revenue Growth Of 92% In The FY 2014-15

PAN India 3G service provider Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has registered an outstanding Mobile Data Revenue Growth of 92 percent in the Financial Year 2014-15. As per the latest information, the gross revenue from Mobile Data services jumped to Rs 1,380 crore in FY 2014-15.

The revenue from Mobile Data services was Rs 720 crore in FY 2013-14. Anupam Shrivastava, CMD, BSNL said, “We have missed on voice bus but we do not want to miss on the data bus. For any company data is the key and we are increasing data carrying capability and focusing on data centric business with main focus on Wi-Fi.“

The mobile data revenue of Rs 1,380 crore in FY 2014-15, shows an outstanding growth of 92 percent vis-a-vis FY 2013-14. In FY 2011-12, BSNL registered mobile data revenue of Rs 240 crore and this increased to Rs 720 crore in FY 2013-14.

“In the last one year, BSNL has strengthened its mobile data portfolio by focusing on Wi-Fi, strengthening its data network and core network (like OTN, MPLS and OFC), expansion of SGSN & GGSN, FTTH (Fiber to the Home) and others and this has resulted in huge jump in data revenue,” added Shrivastava.

In FY 2011-12, mobile data throughput was 50 TB and this has increased to 250 TB in FY 2014-15. It is heartening to know that FY 2014-15 has also shown the highest services revenue for BSNL in the last five years

The increase in mobile data revenue has also led to increase in services revenue of Rs 27,242 crore in FY 2014-15, a growth of 4.16 percent vis-a-vis FY 2013-14.

To increase its data carrying capability, BSNL has focused on Wi-Fi, Data Center, 3G, 4G and FTTH in a big way. Till date, BSNL has installed 460 Wi-Fi hotspots in 230 cities and towns and is planning to install 2,500 Wi-Fi hotspots in FY 2015-16 to give a big fillip to data. In terms of FTTH, BSNL has done well in 45 cities though it has been laid out in 200 cities.

BSNL has also deployed six internet data centers in Gurgaon, Faridabad, Ahmedabad, Chennai, Bangalore and Pune of which Ahmedabad is a cloud data center to give a big push to data services in BSNL.

The company is also investing a lot to increase its data carrying capability. In terms of Capex, BSNL has invested Rs 3,300 crore in FY 2014-15 and plans are to invest Rs 7,700 crore in FY 2015-16.

“Capex investment in the current fiscal is focused on mobile network, core network (OTN, MPLS, router and OFC), next generation network and data expansion,” BSNL CMD added.

With respect to 4G, BSNL is planning to float EoI (Expression of Interest) for 4G services in 25 cities by December, 2015. The expression of interest will lay the ground rules for deployment of 4G services in 25 cities based on revenue sharing model or outright purchase of equipment. It is still not clear which model BSNL is opting for 4G services deployment in 25 cities.
