Our State run PSU Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) has taken one more step towards Digital India Project. As per latest media reports, BSNL has given contract to QuadGen Wireless Solutions Pvt Ltd for setting up Wi-Fi hot spots at public places in Southern States of India which includes Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh & Tamil Nadu.
BSNL Mobile customers would be able to access these public WiFi network to surf high speed internet at a download speed of 10Mbps. Customers may also purchase / recharge Prepaid WiFi vouchers to access the WiFi internet. They can also recharge their WiFi accounts online.
BSNL also announced that there will be Special Postpaid WiFi tariff plans where they can enjoy WiFi broadband internet on payment of monthly fees.
There will be three different types / categories of WiFi hotspot services from BSNL which are:
- Small Hotspot: For Cafe, Lounge, Food court etc., for which a dedicated bandwidth of 2 Mbps will be provided by BSNL
- Mid Size Hotspot: For Malls, IT Parks, Resorts, Hospitals etc., for which a dedicated bandwidth of 4 Mbps will be provided by BSNL
- Large Hotspot: For Campus, Very large mall, uncovered broadband semi urban/rural areas etc., for which a dedicated bandwidth of 10 Mbps will be provided by BSNL
The public WiFi project will be on a revenue sharing basis between BSNL and QuadGen Wireless Solutions.
Recently Reliance Jio has showcased their 4G plans and tariff on their preview portal where they wish to setup public WiFi hotspots across the country. Yes, BSNL is gearing up to compete with with private operators like Reliance Jio with its own public WiFi network.
